I officiated at a friend’s wedding last weekend. On Friday, we met for rehearsal and then ate together. After the meal, the bride gathered all the girls and handed out their gifts. I was eating as I heard the shouts of delight: each girl received a vintage Chicago Bears jersey adorned with their favorite player’s name on the back. Then it was the guys’ turn: each of them received a vintage Chicago Cubs jersey with their favorite player’s name on the back. The smiles on the faces and the excited conversation as the jerseys were put on showed how much each gift was appreciated. Each gift was given with the recipient in mind: the couple gave good gifts!
That was good gift giving in action. It was fun watching the reaction and appreciation of the recipients. Sitting there, I remembered a verse I memorized as a youngster: “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1: 17
I think of the way that God gives gifts: they are given with the recipient in mind, they are designed individually and particularly, and they are always good. God does not change, his gifts will always be good, perfectly designed to fit us.
On my walk this morning, remembering the reactions at the rehearsal, I thanked God for the gifts, abilities and opportunities he has given me. He is the perfect gift giver.
