I can still remember the scenes from the streets of Kuwait as coalition troops entered the city after the smashing triumph of Desert Storm. People were shouting for joy, waving flags and celebrating their freedom from captivity. This invasion, which was measured in hours not days, liberated a nation and showed what could happen when nations worked together in unity.
Jesus’ invasion of the earth in human form also brought liberation: grace instead of law, hope instead of despair, life instead of death. Without Jesus, people were held captive; with his entrance, a new way of freedom was opened.
As Jesus was preparing to exit the earth following his resurrection, he told his disciples, “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days, you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 1: 4-5) On Pentecost, Jesus’ promise came true and the invasion of One was multiplied as the Holy Spirit empowered and energized his followers to move the mission forward.
The invasion of One continues today through every follower of Jesus. As the year begins, I thought it’d be good to give the reminder that the invasion continues. We multiply Jesus’ invasion as we tell his story, as we live out his presence by our actions and reactions, and as we follow his directions daily. The Holy Spirit that came on his followers in Acts 2 still empowers each and every Christ follower today.
What would happen if we all worked together to multiply the invasion? My goal in 2014: to shine Jesus to the people I encounter each day. I want to multiply the invasion, how about you?
